Miley, Eicher, McGuire, and Marcy pick up extra cash at Eriez Speedway!
By Jay Pees
Hammett, PA, (August 3, 2014): a Extra cash was on the line for the four divisions racing Sunday night with $5000 going to the winner of the Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Models 50-lap feature event, $1000 for the Plyler Overhead Door E-Mods, and double pay for the Waterford Hotel Street Stocks and the Kandy’s Gentleman’s Club Challengers.
Don McGuire prevailed in one of the closest Street Stock races of the year with three cars battling for the lead for the final three laps. Gary Eicher came to the lead at twenty laps into the thirty lap main event and went on to his second consecutive E-Mod win. South Park, PA’s Jared Miley made his first trip to Eriez in 2014 pay off with a $5000 win in the 50-lap Super Late Model headliner. Matt Marcy finished off the racing night with a last lap pass for the lead and his fifth win of the season in the Challenger night capper.
The Waterford Hotel Street Stocks were up first with Art Edwards and Shaun Fawcett leading the way to the green then Don McGuire to second after one lap. Edwards then spun in front of the field on turn two of lap two, collecting Fawcett in the process although Fawcett kept going with body damage but retired to the pit at lap eight. A caution at lap eight had McGuire leading with Ken Lamp second and Jeremy Williams up to third. McGuire, trailing smoke, continued to lead after green with cautions again slowing the event at laps nine and eleven. At halfway McGuire was still leading with Lamp second and Groters third. With ten to go Groters was second but Lamp was back to second when caution flew for debris a lap later. Lamp challenged for the lead at lap eighteen but McGuire pulled back ahead. With four to go Chris Withers joined the battle for second. Groters, using the outside, was next to McGuire at the white flag and the two came together in the final turn but McGuire held on for the win. Behind Groters Lamp held on for third with Withers fourth and Williams fifth.
John Boardman and Steve Dixon started on the front row of the Plyler Overhead Door E-Mods feature, thirty laps and $1000 to the winner. Dixon led lap one but Jack Young experienced mechanical gremlins and slowed with steering problems on the main straight causing cars behind him to scatter and get together, slowing the race. At the end of four laps Gary Eicher was second with Butch Southwell coming to third a lap later. Caution eliminated Dixon’s lead at lap eight and tightened the field with Dixon, Eicher, Southwell, Boardman, and Dave Hess showing the way. Several cars got together at the green with Steve Haefke getting ‘air time’ in his first visit to Eriez. During a caution period at lap eleven five time feature winner Joel Watson retired to the pit but rejoined field before green was again waved. At halfway Dixon had a two car length lead over Eicher with Southwell another two lengths back, then Hess and Boardman. Watson again pitted, done for the night. Eicher, the winner July 20, used the high side to gain the lead at twenty laps complete then opened a ten car length lead by the time of the next caution at lap 22. Hess was up to third for the restart. After green Dixon nearly spun in turn two, losing several spots while Eicher drove off to his second win of the season over Hess, Southwell, Mike Kinney, up from tenth at the start, and Boardman.
The Rohrer Trucking / Niemeyer Garage Eriez ’50’ for the Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Models was paced by John Lobb and Jared Miley. Lobb grabbed the immediate lead with Darrell Bossard coming to second at the end of one lap. Andy Boozel came to fourth by lap seven while Max Blair was slipping back from his fourth place starting berth. Bossard began challenging for the lead at lap nine but Lobb pulled back ahead a lap later when caution flew after Ross Robinson and Dave Hess got together in turn four. Under caution Bossard pulled to the pits leaving Miley second and Andy Boozel third. Bossard returned to the track before green, restarting from the rear. Boozel came to second at twelve laps in but Miley came by on the outside for the lead at lap fourteen. At halfway Miley led Boozel by twelve car lengths with Max Blair back up to third, Greg Oakes fourth, and Boom Briggs fifth. Yellow bunched the field at lap 27. After green Max Blair began challenging Boozel for the runner-up spot with the two side by side for several laps before Boozel pulled back to sole possession of the spot. With ten laps to go Miley was back into lapped traffic with Boozel, Max Blair, Mike Knight, and Rob Blair trailing. At Spanky Hall’s four checkers Miley had a quarter lap lead with Boozel second, Max Blair third, Knight fourth, and Rob Blair fifth.
Tom Cupp and Wes Stull led the twenty-one Kandy’s Gentleman’s Club Challengers to the green but it was Gary Olson leading after one lap and Steve Morse to the front at the end of two. Matt Marcy was second at the end of four laps. Halfway saw Morse with a two length lead over Marcy, Travis Darling, Cupp, and points leader Jason Brightman. With the white flag flying Marcy came alongside and completed the pass on the back straight to win his fifth feature of the year over Morse, Darling, Cupp, and Aaron Liberati.
