Annual Dan McGarvie Memorial Sunday Night at Eriez
Hammett, PA (May 14, 2014): Eriez Speedway will remember Dan McGarvie with the 8th Annual Dan McGarvie Memorial for the Kandy’s Gentleman’s Club Challengers this coming Sunday May 18. McGarvie, a long-time competitor are area speedways, passed away on May 13, 2007, suffering a massive cardiac failure during the opening night feature at the track. Dan’s widow, Wendy, and son, Steven, are always on hand for this event with both on the starter’ stand and Steven waving the green for the start of the event. A full field of the four and six-cylinder machines are expected for the event, which pays $500 to win. Joe Beach, opening night winner and last year’s runner-up in the final points standings, is expected to be among the favorites to prevail in the event. Tom Cupp, Matt Marcy, Steven Enlow, and Jason Brightman will be looking to be at the front as well when the checkers fall on the event.
Opening night competition for the Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Models had a rare father-son sweep of the top two spots as 2013 champion Rob Blair defeated his son a former champion in the Bonnell Collision Center FASTRAK Late Model division. 2012 champion Mike Knight had led until three laps from the end when he spin out of contention in lapped traffic. Darrel Bossard ran an excellent race, getting by former track champion Chris Hackett on the final lap for the third spot. Boom Briggs, a multiple feature winner on 2013 rounded out the top five opening night.
Max Blair started racing Super Late Models full time this season, but to the chagrin of competitors began driving for Cody Dawson, a crate competitor from Westover, MD. Last Sunday Max led every lap of the feature, defeating 2013 champion Chad Wright, Mike Knight, Dennis Lunger, and former champion Kyle Zimmerman.
2013 champion Rich Michael Jr also picked up where he left off last year, with a convincing win in the Plyler Overhead Door E-Mods feature event, defeating 2012 champion Joel Watson, 2009 champ John Boyd, 2010 champ Dave Hess Jr, and Dan Davies.
Kelly. Frederes hasn’t been a regular competitor in the Conway & O’Malley Limited Late Models for many years at Eriez but visited last week and demonstrated that he has not forgot how it’s done, leading every lap of an all-green feature event. Dan Maxim, 2013 champion Ryan Scott, 2011 champion Chris Ottaway, and Chris McGuire.
Former champion Chris Withers returned to the Winner’s Circle opening night and will be looking to make it two in a row in the Waterford Hotel Street Stocks this week. The top points cars that will be chasing the Waterford, PA speedster will be Brandon Groters, Jeremy Williams, Pat Fielding and Ron Boardman. 2013 champion John Phelps Jr experienced problems in the feature and starts the season nineteenth in points, but has all season to dig his way out.
