Hammett, PA, August 11, 2013: Another gorgeous night greeted fans and teams at Eriez Speedway. The Twin State Auto Racing Club was in attendance to see two new winners and four repeat trips to Victory Lane. For the first time in his career Tim Fisher went to the Winner’s Circle at the end of the Challenger feature while the Street Stock’s Shawn Fawcett made his first trip to Victory Lane in 2013. Boom Briggs went on to the Super Late Model win after 7-time winner Robbie Blair had serious mechanical ails with five laps remaining in the Super Late Model feature. Briggs and Blair had waged a race-long battle for the lead. Mechanical problems also sidelined six-time winner Rich Michael while he was battling defending points champion Joel Watson in the E-Mod finale, allowing Watson to post his third win of the season. Limited Late Model defending champion Steve Kania led flag to flag for his fourth win of the season. Chad Wright, the FASTRAK Late Model points leader, drove to a convincing win over Max Blair in their finale, his third win of the season. The Twin State Auto Racing Club presented plaques to all feature winners.
The Eric Walter Tree & Stump Removal Street Stocks started twenty-two cars with Ron Johnson and Eric Reinwald leading the way. Right at the drop of the green Matt Tuzynski got into the outside retaining wall on the front straight, turning him backward on the track. Third starting Chad Ramsey was second at the end of one with two-time winner Chris Withers third. A lap later Withers was second, looking for win number three on the season. David Baker looped his mount on lap five, slowing the field for the second time. After restarting Shawn Fawcett came to second and drove around Johnson on the high side at lap eight. Fawcett went on to his first win of the season over Withers, point’s leader John Phelps, reigning champion Pat McGuire, and Paul Schreckengost, last week’s winner.
With Bobby Rohrer inside and points leader Chad Wright outside, the Bonnell Collision Center FASTRAK Late Model feature got underway but at the end of lap one, Khole Wanzer got sideways and stopped on the front straight. At the restart Wanzer and Al Brewer got hooked together, coming to a halt at the end of the front straight. After green Wright and Max Blair ran one-two with Blair trying to get by on the inside, doing so when Wright slipped high in turn two. In turn two on lap five Eric Andrus lost the right rear wheel and flipped his car, bringing red over the field. Since the lap had not completed, Wright was back in the lead for the restart. The race for the lead continued with Wright using the high line and Blair hugging the bottom. At halfway it was Wright, Blair, former champion Kyle Zimmerman, Rohrer, and Bruce Hordusky. A fifteen laps Wright was increasing his lead over Blair with Hordusky and Blair side by side for fourth. Wright went on to his third win of the season over Blair and Zimmerman. Rohrer won the battle for fourth over Hordusky.
John Volpe was on the pole for the Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Model feature but it was seven-time Eriez winner Robbie Blair leading the way by a nose after one lap as caution fell for Chuck Parker and Bob Dorman, who had spun coming out of turn four. At green Blair resumed the lead with Boom Briggs quickly coming to second. At four compete Chub Frank was third, then second a lap later, then back to third behind Briggs still a lap after that. On lap nine Briggs got alongside Blair but was unable to complete the pass. With ten to go, Mike Knight joining the front pack of Blair, Briggs, and Frank. Coming out of turn four on lap twenty-one Blair had a mechanical problem and suddenly slowed, stopping on the outside lane of the track. For the final five-lap shoot out it was Briggs, Frank, Knight, Matt Lux, and Doug Eck. Frank and Briggs ran side by side with three laps remaining but Briggs pulled ahead with two left just as caution flew when Doug Eck stopped on the racing surface in turn two. Briggs led the final two laps with Knight edging Frank at the line for the runner-up spot. It was Briggs’ second win of the season. Lux wound up fourth with Andy Boozel fifth.
Tom Hagberg and Gary Eicher brought the Plyler Overhead Door E-Mods to the green but it was defending champion Joel Watson leading the way at the end of lap one. At lap five the 2009 champion John Boyd was challenging for the lead, holding it briefly on the back straight but Watson able to edge ahead on the front side of the track. At halfway Michael, a six-time winner in 2913, was challenging Boyd in traffic and able to gain the second spot at lap thirteen. Trying for the lead heading into turn three on lap fourteen Michael suddenly experienced mechanical gremlins and pulled high, slowing and heading for the pit, ending a seven night winning streak involving four different speedways. After green flag racing resumed Watson was challenged by Boyd over the remaining laps, but Boyd was never able to complete the pass. The margin of victory was a car-length. Gary Eicher was third with Shane Crotty fourth and Chad Carlson fifth. It was the defending champion’s third win of the season.
Reigning champion Steve Kania and last week’s winner Dan Maxim brought the Conway & O’Malley Limited Late Models to Spanky Hall’s green flag for their twenty lap finale. A pair of yellow flags, the first at lap eight for a spin by Tyler Green, then a lap later for a spin by Mike Lozowski, slowed the event before the halfway point, then the final caution appeared with two remaining as Maxim, Ryan Scott, and Jake Finnerty bounced off each other, causing enough damage that both Finnerty and Maxim were finished for the night. In the final two laps Kania opened his lead, winning over Dustin Eckman, Chris McGuire, Scott, and Mike Lozowski.
Tim Fisher led from the pole of the Kandy’s Gentleman’s Club Challenger feature with Mike Pohl second and Jason Brightman third. The race ran smoothly until eight laps in when last week’s winner Don Hebner came to a halt in turn two, bringing caution over the speedway. Fisher continued to lead after racing resumed, going on to his first win of the season over Pohl, Brightman, Joe Beach, and Travis Darling.
