Stephen Enlow Wins McGarvie Memorial!
Knight, Blair, Watson, Short, and Groters also score wins!
By Jay Pees
Hammett, PA, (May 18, 2014): Eriez Speedway remembered Dan McGarvie Sunday night with it’s annual memorial to the well-liked driver who passed away of heart failure during the opening night Challenger Mini Stock feature in 2007. Thirty-one Challengers signed into the pits with 24 starting the 15-lap event. The field was set through three heat races and a “Last Chance” B-Main. When the green fell pandemonium struck after only one lap as Jesse Phelps barrel-rolled down the front straight. He was not hurt and the event was restarted from lap one. Stephen Enlow went on to win the race after early leader Matt Bryant had mechanical problems and spun from contention.
The Super Late Models feature saw former champion Mike Knight avenge his disappointment from opening night with a convincing win over Darrell Bossard and Rob Blair. Max Blair now has two wins in two starts in the Crate Late Model division, defeating Bobby Rohrer after a battle for the lead that had the crowd on it’s feet. Former champion Joel Watson had the field covered, taking the lead at lap two and never looking back, staving off a challenge from former champion Dave Hess. Nate Short won the Limited Late Model feature after a constant challenge from Dan Maxim. Brandon Groters triumphed in his feature race over former opening night winner Chris Withers.
Brandon Groters and Jimmy Kennerknecht led the full field of twenty-four Waterford Hotel Street Stocks to Spanky Hall’s double green flags to start their 15-lap main event. Groters led from the start with a caution coming at the end of lap one when Don McGuire came to a halt in turn four. Another caution at the end of two again slowed the field when Cody Bliss spun. When the race got going in ernest it was Groters leading opening night winner Chris Withers with Kennerknecht dropping to third. Green prevailed until the halfway mark when Ron Boardman looped his car in turn two. With only three remaining Kenny Lamp spun around in turn four, bringing caution out for the final time in the event. The run for the finish had Groters hanging on for his first win of the season over Withers, Kennerknecht, Mark Thompson, and 2013 champion John Phelps.
Twenty-three Bonnell Collision Center FASTRAK Late Models started their feature with Wendell Pinckney and Scott Gurdak leading the way and last week’s winner Max Blair starting third. Four cars piled up at the end of the back straight when defending champion Chad Wright and Mike Mitchell got together, spun. The others spun to avoid crashing. After restarting Wendell Pinckney and Bobby Rohrer led the first lap but caution slowed the field again when Chad Schauers spun at the flag stand and Chad Wright spun to avoid him. Pinckney and Rohrer led Blair with Rohrer getting alongside Pinckney but unable to complete the pass until until lap nine. One lap later Blair also got by Pinckney and the battle was on for the lead. Rohrer opened up a two car length margin by lap twelve. When yellow flew at lap thirteen for Khole Wanzer spun in turn four Blair was right behind the leader. Schauers again spun, this time out of turn two, collecting Mark Tatlovic and Wanzer before another lap could be completed. With five laps remaining Blair got the inside line from Rohrer and got by in turn two. With only one lap remaining Pinckney spun out in turn four setting up a one lap dash for the win. Blair was up to the challenge, going on to his second win of the year over Rohrer, Matt Latta, Darrell Bossard, and Kyle Zimmerman.
The Dan McGarvie Memorial for the Kandy’s Gentleman’s Club Challengers started with Travis Darling and Andy Proper on the front row and the green flag to begin the event was thrown by McGarvie’s son Steven. Only one lap was history when the red flag was thrown for a wild three-time barrel roll down the front straight by Jesse Phelps. Phelps was checked out by the safety crew but was unhurt. The car, however, was demolished in the ordeal. When racing resumed Darling led at the drop of the green flag but at the end of one lap it was Matt Bryant leading the way over 2013 McGarvie Memorial winner Casey Burch with Stephen Enlow third. Week one winner Joe Beach and the David Scriven came together on the front straight again slowing the event. Bryant led when racing resumed over Burch until lap five when Burch suddenly slowed and headed for the pits. Then Enlow and Darling fought over the runner-up spot with Darling gaining the spot by lap nine. Bryant went on to lead by up to a quarter lap when something in the rear of the car broke heading into turn three, spinning him out of contention. Darling and Enlow then restarted on the front row with only three laps to the checkers. After green Jason Brightman got by Enlow and then both Enlow and Brightman got by Darling when apparently a problem with steering caused him to go wide in turn two and fall back through the field.
Nate Short led the opening laps of the Conway & O’Malley Limited Late Models feature with Dan Maxim second. Coming out of turn two on lap seven Pat McGuire spun into the infield. Short continued to lead after green flew again, going on to his first win of the season. Maxim was second with Scott third, last week’s winner Kelly Frederes fourth, and Pat McGuire fifth.
The Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Models had nineteen cars start the feature with Darrell Bossard and Ryan Scott leading the charge. 2012 champion Mike Knight came to second at the end of one lap but Dutch Davies spun in turn two, collecting Wally Fox, Scott Gurdak, and Michael Oakes. With one lap complete Bossard brought the field back to green with Knight right behind. Another yellow at the end of two laps again slowed the field. On the restart Knight went to the top of the track and got by Bossard before the end of one lap of green. By seven laps into the event last week’s winner Rob Blair was fourth from his ninth place start. At halfway the order was Knight, Bossard, then Blair and Greg Oakes with Andy Boozel rounding out the top five. In traffic Bossard closed the gap on Knight with Blair also closing in. When the lapped traffic was cleared at lap twenty Knight again opened up his lead. At the checkers it was Knight, Bossard, Blair, Oakes, and Boozel.
The final feature of the evening was the Plyler Overhead Door E-Mods, led to the green by 2009 champion John Boyd and defending champion Rich Michael. Michael looped his mount in turn one and the resultant melee eventually involved the cars of Russ Dunn, Dan Davies, and Kurt Thorpe, all the way from Wingate, NC. Boyd and 2012 champion Joel Watson lead the field back to green with Boyd leading lap one but Watson taking over at the end of two. Former champion Dave Hess came to second just as caution flew for Steve Sornberger on lap six, negating the pass. Hess regained second as soon as the race was again underway but caution again flew when Thorpe spun in turn two on lap eight. Watson again led back to the green with Hess right behind and Gary Eicher now third. Boyd and John Boardman filled out the top five at halfway. With five to go four cars piled up in turn three. The final five lap dash was all Watson with Hess winding up second, then Eicher, Boyd, and Boardman.
