Hammett, PA, (July 6, 2014): Eriez Speedway remembered JoAnne Clinger with the annual memorial race for the E-Mods sponsored, as always by Clinger Built E-Mods. A huge fireworks display by Gibson of Titusville to celebrate Independence Day highlighted the evening.
Former champion Joel Watson started the JoAnne Clinger Memorial race from fourth position and took the lead at nine laps into the thirty lap main event. It was Watson’s fifth win of the season. Five-time Eriez Speedway champion Rich Gardner returned to the Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Models Victory lane after a thrilling duel with Matt Urban. Mike Knight made his first-ever visit to the Bonnell Collision Center FASTRAK Late Models Winner’s circle, defending champion Ryan Scott won his first Conway & O’Malley Limited Late Models feature of the season, Don McGuire got by Chris Withers on the final lap of the Waterford Hotel Street Stocks feature for his first win of 2014, and Matt Marcy won his third consecutive Kandy’s Gentleman’s Club Challengers feature.
The Waterford Hotel Street Stocks were the first feature run with Chris Withers and Ron Boardman starting on the front row of the fifteen car event. Withers built a good size lead quickly with third starting Brandon Groters coming to second at the end of one lap, looking for his fifth win of the season. By lap seven fifth starting Don McGuire had come to third and was challenging for second just as Guy Adams spun out in turn four and the caution flag was flying. After the restart McGuire immediately came by Groters and got alongside the leader several times past halfway, then Rob Bates spun with two laps remaining. McGuire came by Withers using the high side on the final lap for his second win of the season. Withers wound up second with Groters third, Rod Lasky fourth and Jimmy Kennerknecht fifth.
One of JoAnne Clinger’s Granddaughters had the honor of waving the green to start the thirty lap main event which had reigning champion Rich Michael’s leading from the outside front row with pole-sitter Mike Smith second. Joel Watson challenged Smith for the spot briefly but then had to contend with Greg Johnson. Yellow flew at lap seven for Steve Sornberger, who had spun in turn three. Watson came to second at the green and was alongside Michael a lap later, then leading at the end of nine laps. Steve Simon brought the next caution period when he spun in turn three. Watson, a former champion, brought the field back to green with Michael second and Johnson coming to third, Mike McGee to fourth, and Dan Davies to fifth. McGee spun from fourth at lap twelve. Dave Hess came to third after the restart from ninth on the grid, then spun out of contention while going for second at lap thirteen. At halfway Watson led Michael, Johnson, Dan Davies (from 11th), and Mike Kinney. Davies went to the outside and nearly got by Michael on the high side but caught the retaining wall instead, sending him to the pits. Johnson got by Michael at lap 21 but Watson was growing his lead. Jack Young got by Michael for third at lap 24 with Kinney coming to fourth a lap later. With three laps remaining Young got to third then another caution appeared. Kinney got back by Young with two to go but again caution reset the field. The final run to the checkers and the $1500 winner’s purse was all Watson with Johnson winning the battle for second over Kinney, Young, and Michael.
Bump Hedman and Rich Gardner led the twenty Jay’s Auto Wrecking Super Late Models to the green flag with five-time champion Gardner leading after one lap. At lap five Matt Urban was challenging Hedman for second and had the spot two laps later. At ten laps in Urban was right behind Gardner. Just as the leaders caught the back of the field Chris Peterson looped his mount in turn four. After green defending champion Rob Blair came to third with John Volpe now fifth. Urban got next to Gardner at lap fourteen but Gardner pulled back ahead at sixteen. At seventeen Urban was again on the low side and the two were even at nineteen. They ran side by side through lap twenty when Max Blair came to a halt in turn four, bringing caution over the field. Gardner brought the field back to green with Urban and Rob Blair lined up right behind. Urban tried over the remaining two laps to get by but but Gardner held on for the win win. Blair wound up third, then Mike Knight fourth, and Volpe fifth.
Ryan Scott, the 2013 Conway & O’Malley Limited Late Models point champion started the feature from the pole and led from the start. Chris McGuire spun at lap five, slowing the event and putting opening night winner Kelly Frederes and Dustin Eckman right on Scott’s rear bumper. Just two laps later McGuire came to a halt in turn two then headed to the pits. Eckman got by Frederes on the restart and began doing battle for the lead. Scott began pulling away at the halfway point. Chris Ottaway came to third at lap twelve. After another restart Eckman tried to get by Scott on the top side but Scott pulled away to his first win of the season with Ottaway getting by Eckman for second on the final dash out of turn four to the checkers. Points leader Nate Short was fourth and Pat McGuire was fifth.
Former champions Kyle Zimmerman and Max Blair led the Bonnell Collision Center FASTRAK Late Models to the green for their feature with Zimmerman grabbing the immediate lead over Blair and Scott Gurdak coming to third. Blair moved to the outside and got by Zimmerman at lap six then started opening a lead. At lap seven Khole Wanzer spun in turn two. After green Mike Knight came to second and got beside Blair briefly but Blair pulled back to the lead before the completion of the lap. At halfway defending champion Chad Wright got to third. At lap fourteen Knight got by Blair coming out of turn four and went on to his first-ever Crate Late Model win. Blair wound up second with Wright third, Zimmerman fourth, and Darrell Bossard fifth.
Travis Darling and Matt Marcy started from the front of the pack of the Kandy’s Gentleman’s Club Challengers feature with Darling leading lap one but Marcy in front after another circuit. Darling lost power on lap four, stopping in turn one. After racing resumed points leader Jason Brightman came to second with Justin Boardman third. After a restart at lap eight Marcy went on to his third win in a row over Brightman. Opening night winner Joe Beach got by Boardman for third on the final lap with Tim Fisher winding up fifth.
